Strange Days Indeed

Time for the MacBook Pro

Wednesday, March 15, 2006 9:07 PM

After the hectic pace of last week, I was more than ready to just settle in, sit back, kick my feet up and hold off for a few days. Why?

Because I had a new system on the way. I’d just found out that my MacBook Pro was going to be shipping soon and well before Apple’s stated date of March 21st. So, I just figured I’d wait until today to make my post.

And I was perfectly willing and able to let you know I received it. In fact I was looking forward to telling you that THIS day, March 15th 2006 I got my MacBook Pro. However, I cannot in all honesty, tell you that.

Because I got it yesterday.

Now, I was fully expecting that I might not have to wait until the 21st. I figured the 20th wouldn’t be out of the question. But, when FedEx updated and said “March 15th” well, I mean that’s a pretty good assurance that’s when it’s gonna arrive, right?

Apparently, either FedEx has gotten their hands on some really neat time travel tech (and why didn’t they have it when I WORKED there) or my new MBP is even faster than I thought. In more ways than one.

What’s the specs? It’s got an Intel Core Duo
at 2 GHz and some change. It’s got 2 Gigs of RAM and, while I tried to get a 2 speed DVD drive to match, they didn’t have any, so I had to settle for four. Which, apparently is exactly how many X’s it has, so at least that matches.

It comes with a remote (that’s the perfect size for getting lost in a couch) that’s used to activate “Front Row” a neat feature that not only will give you access to your media with the push of a button but, if you take it to the theater with you, it will eradicate any rows of seats in front of you, making YOUR row the Front row. Try this from the very back of a theater with stadium seating for the most impressive effect.

The screen is bright. It’s 15.4 inches of way-better-than-night-light bright. In fact the screen is SO bright, that when you turn out the lights, the screen light comes oozing out between the keys lighting up the letters on the keys and making me want to reach for a Geiger counter. Even the “sleep” light could probably help a ship get safely to shore so if you’re really light sensitive, you may want to get a cake pan to keep it under at night. However, this is GOOD news for those that have trouble finding time to go get a tan.

MagSafe? It’s just rude! Let me paint a picture for you. You’re using your laptop, it tells you it’s low on power and needs to be connected to that AC adaptor. So you reach for the cord and you’re ready to plug it in and it YANKS it out of your hand! And no matter how often you try to teach it that it’s not nice to snatch things from people, it just never learns.

Let’s see, what else. It doesn’t whine though the DVD drive sounds like it’s coughing something up when it ejects a disk. Actually, it sounds that way going in as well. :) It’s got ports and connections on the sides for... stuff. Oh, and it’s one inch tall and has one eye, so it should be pretty easy to spot in a crowd. AND there’s a logo on the box saying it’s Universal so I don’t have to worry about having one laptop on Earth and another when I’m traipsing across the universe. THAT alone will be well worth it for me.

That’s about it. I’m happy with it. Just wish they’d let me see the time machine. MAN that would have been awesome.
