Oopsies!
Oopsies!
Mistaken URL-dentity
There comes a time in life that one comes upon the realization that not ALL of us are perfect. Sure, most of the time we’re doing exactly what we intend. BUT, there are other times where our activities seem completely out of our control even though WE are the ones doing the, for the lack of a better word, doing. (That’s DO-ing as in the verb “to be in the do-ness of” not doing! the onomatopoeia... I TOLD you, you NEED to begin using the dictionary helpers I outlined last time!!)
While normally adverse to things asperse, I’m going to lob one in the general direction of informit.com, specifically at an iWeb article by a one Owen Linzmayer on iWeb’s propensity for fueling hatred in some writers. Most of what is said about iWeb is spot on and some is maybe a bit questionable. For example, number 8, “Dumb Default URL”. I understand the writer’s point here quite clearly. Why should that area ALWAYS point to Apple’s website? Try this in iWeb. Go to a website you want to link to in Safari, and Copy the URL. Now, select an object or text you want to apply a hyperlink to. Choose the Link tab in the inspector and then click the Enable as a hyperlink button. Now wouldn’t it be nice if that URL you just copied were magically pasted into the URL area for you?
If you’d just went through those steps, you’d know that is precisely how it works, thus decreasing the valid hatred vectors of iWeb by one. There’s lots of other reasons for hating iWeb, but the URL thing isn’t one of them.
Since the article only mentions iWeb 1.1, that may have been the case with that version, but the date on the article might lead you to think this was written more recently (as of this writing, it read Nov 11, but the first time I checked on the 9th it read Nov 9). Either way, this is a tiny mistake in the grand scheme of things and, believe it or not, these things happen!
Even in reviewing these pages, I’ve come upon a few things that need to be corrected/updated BUT I didn’t want to just go back and quietly update those pages with no fanfare. I wanted to CELEBRATE my bounty of blunders. This is why next week, I’ll try to pick one page a day and point out where it’s either no longer current or just simply an intentional inaccuracy.
In so doing, perhaps you too can embrace the intentional inaccuracy in yourself knowing that the mistakes you make today allow you to fix them in the future. And, really, isn’t that what mistakes are all about?
